How You Can Help
Everyone at John Muir has something to share. Below are some of the volunteer opportunities.
Our current needs are listed on signup.com (no registration needed!)
Weekdays 11:50 AM – 1:00 PM.
Help develop and encourage negotiation skills, settle disputes as they arise, be friendly, and provide a positive, stable role model for all students. Volunteers supplement the staff on the playground, and in the lunchroom. Volunteers are trained and supervised by staff. Volunteers report to Erika Irwin, our Attendance Secretary, on the playground.
Wednesdays 7:40 AM – 8:05 AM
Greet parents as they drop off children. Provide coffee and baked goods with the idea of building community and allowing a space for the community to linger and talk, with the exception of Second Cup Wednesdays, where there are more treats and more coffee. This is a PTA sponsored and reimbursed event. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org, if you’d like to volunteer.
Cross Guard Attendants/Safety Patrol Helper
8:20 AM to 8:40 AM or 2:50 PM to 3:00 PM
Lunch Room Helper
Weekdays 11:30 AM – 12:45 PM.
Help students navigate the social and emotional demands of school in the less structured environment of the school cafeteria. Maintain orderly conduct, dismiss for composting and recess. Make friends and be a positive role model for all students.
Help classrooms during their weekly library hour. All classroom times involves crowd control; checkout; shelving; possibly reading to kids; and helping the kids on laptop computers in the library. There’s also an opportunity on Wednesdays (morning or afternoon) to work in the back room processing books, entering them into the library database, covering, stamping, putting on barcodes, etc. No direct work with kids. Great for a detail oriented person who likes quiet and to work alone.
Volunteers report to Stephen Marsh, our librarian.
A well-attended and popular event! Publicize event beginning three weeks prior. Help create posters for school. Reserve the DJ. Coordinate volunteers to bring snacks, set up, chaperone and clean up.
Teacher Appreciation Week
Typically held twice a year, in December and in May.
Celebrate staff and teachers during a week of PTA organized events, including a potluck lunch at school, coffee delivery, thank you notes and flowers.
Art Room Helper
Help our art teacher, Julie Trout by doing any of the following prep materials (cutting, rolling clay, organizing) for art class and help mount artwork. Mounting can be done from home or in the art classroom. Help in the classroom with students (on Mondays and Wednesdays only). Help hang art work once a month. Visit her amazing website. Please contact Julie Trout.
Grade Level Potlucks and Picnics
Help organize a “welcome back” potluck in September or an “end of year” picnic in June for all the classrooms in your student’s grade level. Events take place on the school playground after school.
Create a school-wide “phone book” for families to connect outside of school for playdates and birthday parties, or coordinate after school pickups. Point person would distribute forms, perform data entry, manage printing and distribution of completed directory.
Help your student’s teacher as needed. Be a liaison with the PTA to ensure the classroom’s needs are being met.
