Upcoming Opportunities
note: opportunities requiring prior School District Approval to volunteer at the school are marked with *
*Literacy Night (November 21) - Kate Scheuler would like to have volunteers help before the event to pre-plan, and some during the event to help with the set up, sign-in table, and clean up
*Kwanzaa Celebration: The John Muir Black Excellence Committee will is hosting the 2nd annual Kwanzaa Celebration on December 11, 5:30-7:30.
We are looking for volunteers to help with recruiting community organizations that can host a table to give families resources and extracurricular activities. Some examples include food pantries, clothing banks, medical, dental, housing resources and free activities for kids to do after school.
We are always looking for volunteers that can donate their time to setup/serving/clean up at events.
Hearing and Vision Screening: It’s that time of year again for our annual hearing and vision screenings, and your help would be greatly appreciated!
When:
11/20, 10:30am – 1pm
11/21, 10:30am – 2pm
We will use a SPOT vision screener, a quick and easy tool to check for vision problems. Training will be provided—no experience needed!
Why volunteer?
Help our students succeed by supporting their health.
Make a difference: Early detection of vision and hearing issues can improve learning.
It will be a busy but fun day, and you will meet other parents, staff, and students.
Volunteer Roles:
SPOT Screener Operator: Conduct screenings.
Documentation Assistant: Keep records.
Referral Writer: Note students needing more help.
Student Support: Help keep kids focused and organized.

*Girls in the Game Coaches: The school is looking for a few staff or community members who would be interested in coaching Girls in the Game, an after school soccer and songwriting program that will be piloted at Muir this fall. The program would run from 2:30-4:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from October 15 until winter break. There’s a preference for folks who have some experience leading a group of students (15-20 kids). The position is paid at a rate of $35-$50 per hour and there is some flexibility if people are only able to commit to one of those days per week. Contact Assistant Principal Wheatley (jmwheatley@seattleschools.org) if interested or for more information.
Ongoing Opportunities
*Shelving in the Library - looking for a peaceful and satisfying way to volunteer at the school? Teacher Librarian JK Burrell is looking for someone to help with shelving once every 1-2 weeks. Additionally, if any families have finished with their Legos and would like to donate them, the library would love to have them. Message JK Burwell at joburwell@seattleschools.org if interested.
*Reading/Partners:
John Muir is continuing our after-school reading program this year and we would love some parent tutor volunteers! Volunteers will receive tutor training on the Reading Partners program and then work one-on-one with the same student during the school year. Tutors are provided with an easy-to-follow curriculum that includes step-by-step lesson plans, as well as an onboarding and training session. No previous experience is necessary. Tutoring happens Mondays and Tuesdays, right after school:
2:40-3:40.
We prefer folks to commit to 2 hrs/week for the school year, but if you can commit to only Monday or Tuesday, we are happy to have you. Volunteers should have their own laptop device and reliable wifi for lesson prep. See link to register:

Please send any questions to Julie Thompson, the site coordinator, at jathompson3@seattleschools.org for any additional information
*Join the Literacy Lions - Call for Volunteers: We invite you to become part of our Literacy Lions team and help us meet our school's vision of inclusivity and personal learning goals for all students. By volunteering, you'll spend time in the building with our wonderful students and dedicated staff, providing essential support for every learner.
Position Overview:
Commitment: Volunteer 1-4 times a week for one hour.
Student Interaction: Work with K-2 students on individualized sight words.
Tailored Learning: Students will have differentiated sight words to practice at home and school.
Consistent Support: The system remains the same throughout the year, with ongoing assistance from our reading intervention team.
Community Building: Connect with other families and help create a supportive environment for all learners.
If you’re interested in making a difference, please reach out to Kate Schueler (kmschueler@seattleschools.org)
*Lunch or recess duty: John Muir is always in need of parents to help monitor games and support transitions during lunch and recess. Shifts are available Monday-Friday from 11:30am-1:00pm (90 mins each day), although we are in particular need for volunteers to cover Wednesdays from 11:35-12:20.
Board committees: The new PTA needs volunteers to support various volunteer committees (e.g., programmatic/enrichment planning, fundraising, community engagement, and communications).
Note about classroom volunteering: if you are interested in volunteering in your child’s class, please know that it is up to the individual teacher to determine if (and how many) opportunities are available for volunteers. Please message the teacher directly.
Overview of Volunteer Opportunities

Opportunities will be posted on the calendar page of the website and listed here, with specific information about how to sign up for current opportunities.
Community and school events may include events such as:
Community meeting(s)

Volunteer in the school
(ad hoc and on-going support)
Volunteering in the school can benefits from an on-going commitment, but is not always the case. As a first step, note that to volunteer directly with students in the classroom, you must complete the SPS volunteer application process. Current volunteer opportunities will be highlighted on this page as the year progresses.
School-based volunteer opportunities may include opportunities such as:
Regularly scheduled volunteering in a consistent classroom to support student learning
As hoc support for classroom needs - e.g., laminating, stapling, and organizing papers
Volunteer with the PTA
(on-going Support)
The PTA has currently identified two primary opportunities for volunteer support (in addition to the opportunities already highlighted above). These are:
Joining an existing PTA committee or project
Leading a new PTA committee or project
Please visit our about page here to see a list of existing and unfilled committee opportunities.
