Monster Mash Art Exhibit - Summer 2023
Monster Mash 2023
June 24- August 8
This project started with a conversation in 2013 between Stacy (Franklin High ceramics instructor) and Julie (John Muir Elementary visual arts specialist) about creating some sort of collaboration between our student artists. John Muir kindergarten students draw and paint some sort of creature from their imagination. We talk about how to put shapes together, show what the creature “feels” like, favorite colors, and put as many details as possible. We tell the kindergartners the creatures are going to high school and will be back. The paintings are given to the Franklin High School Advanced Ceramics students, many of whom are former John Muir students. They interpret the drawings and create clay sculptures. When the creatures come back to Muir, our kinder artists get to experience the transformation of their drawings into sculptures. There are many wonderful elements to this collaboration- arts as a career path, benefits of giving and gratitude, celebrating the arts, and building community.

Our community represents a beautiful tapestry of cultures from around the world. This is an opportunity for us to come together and experience the various cultural cuisines, music, fashion and so much more.
This event will be a community potluck and we welcome you to bring a dish from your culture to share. You can let us know what dish you're planning to make here. We're also calling for volunteers to help make the event run smoothly. If you're able, please sign up for a volunteer shift.

Bringing Mindfulness Home | ZOOM - Registration Required
*PLEASE NOTE: this is not a PTA sponsored event - The Space Between is a partner organization that provides programming to Muir Students.
Being a parent/caregiver is wonderful and can also be extremely stressful, especially when combined with the many demands on our shoulders each day, our feelings about the past, and our worries about the future. Mindfulness is a set of tools that bring us into the present moment and enables us to cope with stress, respond with compassion, and stay connected to our children and our partners.
Join us for an engaging session for both youth and adults where we will learn mindfulness practices for every day use in families with proven tools for awareness and connection. This session will include creative breathing, mindful movement and other practices that parents/caregivers and children can do together, and will also include information for adults about how mindfulness may support them in their role of raising families. Join us for:
Proven Mindfulness tools
Connecting with family, community and children
Simple practices that may be used daily
Past participants have said:
I love your use of story. I always feel that part of Space Between's strength is in the use of relatable, "real-person" stories to teach. I love "compassion and curiosity."
I feel like you are highlighting that this isn’t about being the perfect, zen parents. It’s about having tools so that I have more choice during stressful moments, more awareness in the beautiful, fleeting moments, and more compassion for myself in the difficult times.
