Monster Mash Art Exhibit - Summer 2023

Monster Mash 2023

June 24- August 8

This project started with a conversation in 2013 between Stacy (Franklin High ceramics instructor) and Julie (John Muir Elementary visual arts specialist) about creating some sort of collaboration between our student artists.  John Muir kindergarten students draw and paint some sort of creature from their imagination. We talk about how to put shapes together, show what the creature “feels” like, favorite colors, and put as many details as possible. We tell the kindergartners the creatures are going to high school and will be back. The paintings are given to the Franklin High School Advanced Ceramics students, many of whom are former John Muir students. They interpret the drawings and create clay sculptures.  When the creatures come back to Muir, our kinder artists get to experience the transformation of their drawings into sculptures. There are many wonderful elements to this collaboration- arts as a career path, benefits of giving and gratitude, celebrating the arts, and building community.
